"The World Health Organization estimates that 527,000 women in the developing world died in 2000 from maternal causes. Almost all of these deaths occurred in Africa and Asia; India alone suffered 136,000 deaths. The lifetime risk of maternal death is 1 in 61 for women in the developing world, 1 in 2,800 for women in more developed countries."
As stated in my "about me" section, I became an avid maternal health advocate when my son was born. I have researched and supported many groups and efforts which support maternal health in developing countries. I would suggest watching the documentary "No Woman, No Cry" directed by
Christy Turlington Burns if maternal health is a topic which interests you. It is a wonderful documentary that focuses on maternal death in developing countries. This documentary is available on Netflix.
Another portion of the quiz that shocked me was the answer which read:
"826 million people are not getting enough food to lead healthy and active lives. Roughly 34 million children, women, and men are undernourished in the more developed world, but the vast majority of nearly 800 million live in the developing world."
This answer for me was heart breaking. Food, especially healthy food, is a basic human need. The amount of people that are not getting enough to lead healthy active lives is astounding. I think it is important to address these issues in our own communities.
I did learn a substantial amount of information from the quiz. It was very informative and made me really think before I submitted an answer. Another documentary I would suggest watching after taking this quiz is called "It's a Girl" (also available on Netflix) which focuses on "gendercide."
